Matcha Green Tea

Matcha is a special type of Japanese green tea that’s made in a powder form. Matcha green tea is much stronger and more concentrated than regular green tea and it tastes fabulous with a splash of milk.

How Many Calories in an Iced Matcha Latte

The calories in a matcha green tea latte vary greatly depending on the type of milk and sweetener used. In a regular matcha latte made with a cup of almond milk and a teaspoon of honey there would be around 50 calories with 2 grams of fat and 6 grams of sugar. If you decide to layer up your latte with added strawberries, this will be around an extra 40 calories per two tablespoons. Of course you can omit the sweetener or use a zero calorie sweetener if you are cutting back.

Milk Options for an Iced Matcha Latte

Feel free to use any type of milk that takes your fancy for this latte recipe but make sure to use cold milk straight from the fridge and pour it over lots of ice. I prefer to use almond milk or oat milk in my tea lattes but the dairy and non dairy milk options are endless. There’s cows milk, rice milk, coconut milk, hemp milk, soy milk, cashew milk and the list goes on! PLUS the thicker the milk that you use for this recipe, the better the layered effect will look as the matcha layer will sit nicely on top of the milk layer.

How Much Caffeine is in an Iced Matcha Latte

Because matcha green tea is highly concentrated, it contains high amounts of caffeine. Half a teaspoon serving of matcha contains around 35mg of caffeine, a teaspoon serving will contain around 70mg of caffeine. For comparison, a cup of regular green tea contains around 25mg of caffeine and a regular cup of coffee contains around 95mg of caffeine.

Health Benefits of Matcha Green Tea

Matcha green tea is well known for it’s wonderful health boosting benefits. All types of tea contains fabulous antioxidants. Tea is high in a catechin called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG for short). Matcha contains higher amounts of EGCG than regular green tea as it’s minimally processed and taken in more concentration. Antioxidants are responsible for helping to keep us younger and healthier. Some studies suggest that the antioxidants in tea have anti aging properties, anti cancer properties and can even aid in weight loss.

How to Mix Your Matcha

There are various ways to mix up matcha. The preferred way is to use a special bamboo whisk. However, if you don’t have the proper equipment, don’t let that stop you from making this fabulous drink. You can alternatively use a milk frother, a blender or a mason jar with a lid. The idea is to smoothly mix the matcha to rid of any lumps before adding it to your latte recipe.

Ingredients for an Iced Matcha Green Tea Latte

Here is what you will need to make this totally delicious coffee shop copy cat drink:

  • Matcha green tea

  • Milk of choice (Cow’s, almond, oat etc…)

  • Sweetener of choice (sugar, honey, simple syrup etc…)

  • Lots of ice

  • Homemade/shop bought strawberry purée (optional)

  • Rose water and rose petals (optional)

How to Make an Iced Matcha Latte From Scratch

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Teaspoon of matcha green tea

  • 1 Cup of milk (cow’s, almond, oat etc…)

  • 1-2 Teaspoons of sweetener (simple syrup, honey, sugar etc…)

  • Lots of ice

  • 2 Tablespoons of strawberry puree (optional)

  • 1/2 Teaspoon of rose water (optional)

  • Whipped cream (optional)

  • Rose petals to decorate (optional)

METHOD

  • To make the homemade strawberry puree: place a cup of fresh or frozen strawberries in a small saucepan and allow to simmer for around 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally and break up with the back of a wooden spoon. Remove from the heat once the strawberries have become saucy and syrupy. Allow to cool and store in the fridge. If you would like a smooth puree, you can blend up your strawberries. - Feel free to buy strawberry purée from the store for a speedier latte.

  • To make your iced matcha latte: Firstly place two tablespoons of strawberry puree together with your sweetener in the bottom of your glass and add a few drops to half a teaspoon of culinary rose water.

  • Next, add lots of ice before adding your milk over the top of the ice. This will help create the layers.

  • In a small bowl or mixing jug add your matcha green tea powder and a splash of freshly boiled but slightly cooled water. Using a bamboo whisk or mini milk frother, mix your matcha paste until no clumps remain. If you do not have a bamboo whisk or milk frother, you can mix your matcha in a small mason jar with a lid and vigorously shake it.

  • Feel free to store your matcha in the fridge for an hour or so before adding it to your iced milk. This step isn’t necessary but it does help keep your iced latte extra icy and refreshing.

  • Pour your matcha mix over the top of your ice and milk. Add optional whipped cream and a sprinkle of pretty rose petals. Give it a stir and enjoy :)
