An activated charcoal latte or black latte is a really interesting drink made from hot frothy/steamed milk, sweetened with honey/maple syrup or sugar and then blended with food grade activated charcoal. This recipe is tea inspired and incorporates the spicy flavours of masala chai.

In all honesty a charcoal latte, whilst looks really pretty, doesn’t have too much taste other than the hot milk and sweetener of choice. HOWEVER, incorporating masala chai into the recipe creates a super tasty tea latte full of both flavor and health boosting benefits.

A charcoal latte can be very healthy. I’m using food grade activated charcoal powder made from coconut shells.

What is Activated Charcoal Made Of?

Activated charcoal is made of a fine black powder that can be made from a number of things such as bone char, coal and even sawdust! However, edible activated charcoal is mainly made from coconut shells. I’m using food grade activated charcoal made from coconut shells in this chai latte recipe.

Is it Safe to Drink Activated Charcoal Everyday?

Whilst many people drink activated charcoal everyday and it is considered safe, it is best to check with your healthcare provider before taking any herbal remedies. I always say that every thing in moderation does you good!

How to Make Coconut Chai Charcoal Lattes at Home

INGREDIENTS (Serves 2)

  • 2 teaspoons of masala chai (or 2 tea bags)

  • 1 teaspoon of activated charcoal powder

  • 2 cups (16fl oz) of milk (coconut/soy almond/regular etc…)

  • 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) of coconut cream (or regular cream)

  • 1-2 tablespoons of honey/maple syrup/agave

  • Whipped Cream to serve - optional

  • Dusting of cinnamon to Serve - optional

METHOD

  • Firstly, pour the coconut milk into a saucepan and heat through. Add the coconut cream and sweetener of choice and stir until the ingredients have melted and are well combined.

  • Turn off the heat and add the tea, place the lid on and allow to infuse for 5-10 minutes. Strain out the leaves using a fine mesh strainer.

  • Next, add the activated charcoal powder and using a milk frother or a blender, combine and create lots of latte like bubbles.

  • Pour into cups and add whipped cream and a dusting of cinnamon to serve. Enjoy!
