Making Hot Chocolate With Masala Chai at Home

Making this indulgently thick, rich and creamy hot chocolate is easy to whip up in under ten minutes. First of all, heat your milk of choice and infuse your tea. Allow to steep before removing the leaves. Whisk in your cocoa powder, chocolate chips, cream and sweetener of choice. Mix together until everything has melted before pouring into cups or mugs. Add whipped cream and marshmallows.

INGREDIENTS (Serves 2)

  • 2 Heaped teaspoons of masala chai (or 2 Tea Bags)

  • 1/4 Cup (4-6 tablespoons) of dark chocolate - chopped

  • 1 Tablespoon of cocoa powder

  • 2 Cups (16fl oz) of milk (regular or non dairy)

  • 1/4 Cup (4 tablespoons) of cream (regular or non dairy)

  • 2-3 Tablespoons of sweetener (maple syrup/honey/agave)

  • Whipped cream, marshmallows and grated chocolate to serve - optional

METHOD

  • Pour the milk into a saucepan and bring the milk to a boil. Turn off the heat and add the masala chai. Allow to steep for 5-10 minutes before straining the leaves and returning the infused milk to the heat.

  • Next, add the chopped chocolate, cocoa powder, cream, sweetener and keep stirring until everything has completely melted.

  • Pour into mugs or cups and top with whipped cream, marshmallows and grated chocolate for extra indulgence.
